Baja Mexico Surfing!!!!
So you want to go surfing in Baja? I'm sure many of you have because the Baja coast is loaded with great surf spots. But read on!!! Well, we've traveled to Mexico on many trips and this most recent one, although questionable due to the current dangers in Tijuana (aka TJ), was packed with good waves, friends, fish tacos and Cerveza!! As we had heard there were some problems in TJ, little did we know how serious the dangers were until we spoke with different people back in California, about kidnappings of Americans for ransom and other hostile acts. Drug wars and drug lords were dominating TJ which resulted in many murders, actually the highest murder rate in Tijuana in a long time. 800 plus murders, up from 300 the previous year 2007. Furthermore the U.S. State department issued travel warnings to the Baja region. Even a Colonel at Camp Pendleton Marine Base issued orders to all military personnel not to travel to TJ. So, now you are completely freaked out about going south? Just understand that there is a serious problem going on down there and its probably not the best time to visit.
Although our trip to Baja was uneventful except for the great surfing and good times, we will definitely educate ourselves about the safety and stability of the area before heading south for more waves.
